    The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is advancing multiple transportation improvement projects on Route 41 (Gap Newport Pike/Pennsylvania) in London Grove Township and Avondale Borough, Chester County. Between 1993 and 2010, a planning study was undertaken by PennDOT, and the Route 41 Planning Study Report was prepared.

    The project is divided into 5 sections:

    • Route 41 (Gap Newport Pike) and Route 926 (Street Road) intersection improvements project (completed in 2024).
    • Route 41 (Gap Newport Pike) and Route 841 (London Grove Road) intersection improvements project.
    • Route 41 (Gap Newport Pike) and U.S. 1 (Kennett Oxford Bypass) interchange improvements project.
    • Route 41 (Pennsylvania Avenue), 1st Street and E State Street intersection improvements project.
    • Route 41 (Pennsylvania Avenue) over East Branch of White Clay Creek Bridge replacement project.

    This project involves addressing the safety and operational needs at the Route 41 (Gap Newport Pike) intersection with Route 841 (London Grove Road) in the Village of Chatham in London Grove Township, Chester County.

    The proposed interchange improvements at this location also involve the reconstruction and overlay of Route 41 for approximately 1,900 feet and the replacement of the Route 41 bridge over U.S. 1 to provide adequate vertical clearance for vehicles on U.S. 1. The ramps at this interchange will also be lengthened to provide the required acceleration and deceleration lanes for entering and exiting vehicles to and from U.S. 1.

    The goal of this project is to create a safer, more reliable crossing over the East Branch of White Clay Creek along Route 41. The new crossing will be able to handle current and future traffic without weight limits and will improve—or at least maintain—how water flows under the bridge during storms.
