This project is located in Lower Providence Township, Montgomery County, and involves improvements to alleviate congestion and traffic delays, improve safety, and enhance overall regional mobility. It includes eliminating the existing poorly skewed signalized intersection of Germantown Pike (County) and Ridge Pike (SR 4031) near the Perkiomen Creek Bridge and relocating it (with a new traffic signal) approximately 1,300 feet east on Ridge Pike. To accommodate the shifted intersection, construction of a new Germantown Pike Connector Road (on new alignment) from the existing Germantown Pike (at a proposed roundabout) extending across Ridge Pike to Pechins Mill Road (township) is proposed. The existing stop sign-controlled River Road (SR 4009)/Germantown Pike t-intersection will be removed and River Road will be extended east to the proposed roundabout. Roadway widening on Ridge Pike and Pechins Mill Road is required. New storm drainage pipes/inlets, as well as stormwater management facilities, will be installed throughout the entire project area.
An in-person public meeting was held in preliminary engineering on November 14, 2018, and a virtual public meeting was held at the start of the final design on May 6, 2021. Public feedback was collected at both meetings.
Road Construction (Updated October 2026)
Utility companies continue relocation along Ridge Pike, Germantown Pike, River Road and Pechins Mill Road. Utility relocation includes poles, aerial wires, and underground facilities. Gas main, sanitary sewer and waterline relocations will continue into the spring of 2027. Utility relocations will continue through 2027.
Stage 1: PennDOT’s contractor, Allan Myers continues Ridge Pike road construction, drainage, installation of new curb and sidewalk, and asphalt paving along Ridge Pike from Cross Keys Road to Germantown Pike. Construction of relocated Germantown Pike and the roundabout at Bard Circle is substantially complete. Sections of relocated Germantown Pike have been paved and sections of the concrete curb, sidewalk, and mountable curb have been placed. Construction of the new Germantown Pike extension from Ridge Pike to Pechins Mill Road is progressing.
Stage 2 is scheduled to follow in early 2027. It includes reconstructing the south side of Ridge Pike, Pechins Mill Road, and part of the new Germantown Pike connector and roundabout. It is anticipated to complete by fall of 2027.
Stage 3 is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2027. Construction operations will be at the east leg of the relocated Germantown Pike and roundabout with an anticipated completion in fall of 2027.
Stage 4 is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2027 and continue through the spring of 2028. It will begin with River Road and Germantown Pike improvements.
Stage 5 is scheduled to begin in early summer 2028. It includes the installation of the remaining curbs and sidewalks along Ridge Pike, final asphalt paving, and permanent line striping.
PennDOT expects to substantially complete the project in early 2029.
Traffic Impacts
Motorists are advised of the following travel restriction: Ridge Pike will remain reduced to a single lane in each direction between Germantown Pike and Crosskeys Road through Friday, January 29, 2027.
During construction, there will be short-term weekday (9 AM to 3 PM) and occasional nighttime (7 PM to 6 AM) lane closures, which may restrict Ridge Pike and Germantown Pike. There will be three short-term detours of Ridge Pike (10 PM to 6 AM) to install storm drainage. Short-term detours are tentatively scheduled for summer 2026. Advanced notice of the detours will be issued once the dates have been determined. All area businesses remain open and accessible during construction. PennDOT will continue to update citizens on the upcoming traffic impacts.
