Project Overview
County: Chester
Municipality: Penn Township
State Route: 3044
Local Name: Ewing Road
Project Type: Bridge Replacement
Last Updated: July 2025
This project will replace two existing structures carrying Ewing Road over an unnamed tributary to the Middle Branch of White Clay Creek. Located in Penn Township, Chester County, about 2 miles northwest of West Grove near the Route 1 bypass, Ewing Road carries 500 vehicles daily (2024), with 9% truck traffic. The surrounding area features a mix of single-family homes, farmland, and dense forests.
The existing structure, situated 280 feet west of Woodcrest Road, was built in 1910. It is a concrete-encased steel I-beam bridge with a curb-to-curb width of 14.1 feet and a span length of 12 feet. The other structure, located 500 feet southeast of Tice Road, was constructed in 1911. It is a reinforced concrete slab bridge with a curb-to-curb width of 15 feet 6 inches and a span length of 12 feet.
Both new structures will be built on the existing horizontal alignment with minor vertical grade adjustments. The proposed replacements are expected to be reinforced concrete box culverts, and both will be extended. The reconstructed roadway will be widened to include two 11-foot travel lanes and two 3-foot shoulders, creating a 28-foot-wide section. New guard rails will be installed, and drainage systems will be upgraded to minimize erosion near the bridges.
During construction, Ewing Road will be temporarily detoured. Driveway access will be maintained at all times.
