This project is one of three proposed projects supporting future development of the Bellwether District, which is a private development. MPMS 82200 (PennDOT Bellwether Phase 1A) is the roadway project involving interchange improvements between the 34th Street On-Ramp and the 28th Street Off-Ramp along Eastbound I-76 in the City of Philadelphia, Philadelphia County.
Proposed Construction Activities:
Along I-76
- Removal of existing static chevron signs and installation of dynamic curve warning chevron signs along the curve between the 34th Street On-Ramp and the Vare Avenue Off-Ramp.
- Installation of barrier delineators from the 34th Street On-Ramp to the I-76 On-Ramp from Vare Avenue.
- Roadway milling and overlay, updated pavement markings, and modifications to overhead signage to support the conversion of the middle lane to a center option lane for access to Passyunk Avenue/I-76 Eastbound from the 34th Street On-Ramp to the Passyunk Ave Interchange.
Along Vare Avenue
- Roadway milling and overlay from Warfield Street to Maiden Lane.
- Updated pavement markings and signage to implement clear two-lane delineation from the Vare Avenue Off-Ramp to Maiden Lane.
- Full depth reconstruction of the I-76 On-Ramp from Vare Avenue including removal/replacement of curb and barrier to implement two-lane delineation and 40mph design speed.
- Replacement of crash attenuator devices at both the Vare Avenue Off-Ramp and I-76 On-Ramp from Vare Avenue.
- Removal of existing 32” substandard median barrier and installation of 50” concrete median barrier to eliminate glare from headlights caused by future conversion to two-way traffic just North of the 28th Street curve.
All proposed work is within Public Right-of-Way. No temporary construction easements are anticipated. Design funding is 100 percent funded by the project sponsor, Bellwether District Holdings, LLC (private developer). Construction funding is 100 percent state through the Transportation Infrastructure Investment Funding (TIIF).
