Project Overview
County: Montgomery
Municipality: Municipality of Norristown
State Route(s): U.S. 202
Local Name(s): DeKalb Street
Project Type: Corridor Improvement
Last Updated: December 2025
In partnership with the Municipality of Norristown, the Department will advance the design of this project to implement two-way traffic along DeKalb Street. The project extends from Lafayette Street to Johnson Highway. Its goal is to improve connectivity in the transportation network, reduce speeding, and enhance pedestrian safety. The design will include both preliminary engineering and final design phases for this 1.5-mile section of U.S. 202.
Pedestrian safety measures and traffic calming strategies will be incorporated. This includes evaluating and updating intersection controls within the project area.
Currently, DeKalb Street (U.S. 202) mostly has two lanes of northbound one-way traffic. The Municipality of Norristown completed a traffic feasibility study for this operational change in 2011.
Survey Update: As part of the Department of Transportation's role in planning highway improvements for this project, department staff, consultants, or contractors will conduct above-ground surveys to collect information. They will not enter land owned by private entities during this process. The Department will notify residents personally before any entry beyond the Right-of-Way lines. The survey is scheduled to begin in January 2026 and will be conducted courteously and efficiently. If you have concerns about this survey, please get in touch with Bruce Masi at (610) 757-1879 or discuss your concerns with on-site personnel. We thank you for your cooperation and support in improving transportation facilities for Pennsylvania's citizens.
