The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites the public to an online plan display regarding the Route 340 (Old Philadelphia Pike) bridge maintenance project.

The project is located over Mill Creek in East Lampeter Township, Lancaster County, approximately 7 miles east of Lancaster. 

The purpose of the project is to perform bridge maintenance activities to extend the service life of the structure and continue to provide a safe crossing for the traveling public.

The project maintenance activities include, but are not limited to: zone repainting, vegetation removal to facilitate repainting, flushing and extending scuppers, and resealing bridge asphalt joint.

To successfully perform the maintenance activities, short- and long-term traffic control is expected. There will be no reduction in number of lanes.

The project is currently in design and construction is anticipated to take place during the 2027 construction season.

Environmental

The project is located approximately seven miles east of Lancaster in a mixed rural and suburban setting with the adjacent land use commercial, agricultural, and residential.  No wetlands were located near the existing bridge location. Coordination for the Indiana bat will be included as part of the project.  No identified historic resources, public parks, state forests, or state gamelands are anticipated to be impacted by the project. There is no documented hazardous, residual, or municipal waste near the immediate project area.

Utilities

There are several overhead utilities located on the north side of the bridge. These include PPL power lines and Comcast communication lines. No impacts are expected to these utilities. UGI has an underground gas line and East Lampeter Township has a sanitary sewer line on the south side of the bridge. No impacts are expected to these utilities.

Right-of-Way

All maintenance activities will be completed within existing right-of-way.

Maintenance and Protection of Traffic

To successfully perform the maintenance activities, short and long-term traffic control is expected. There will be no reduction in number of lanes.

Schedule and Cost

Construction is anticipated to be during the 2027 construction season at an estimated cost of $200,000.
