Last Updated: August 2026

The current Airy Street Bridge is about 529 feet long, has five steel spans, and carries one-way traffic westbound across two lanes. Around 7,164 vehicles cross it daily at a speed limit of 25 mph. The bridge also features a pedestrian ramp leading down to Markley Street on the northeast side. While the municipality of Norristown owns Airy Street itself, PennDOT owns the bridge (SR-3009).

The proposed project will replace the old structure in the exact same location with a new three-span bridge. It will feature two traffic lanes, a regular sidewalk on the north side, and a wider path for both walkers and cyclists on the south side.

The new structure will be built using steel beams and concrete. It will measure 26 feet wide from curb to curb, with a total outside width of nearly 44 feet. Concrete walls at both ends will support the structure.

Safety walls and fences will protect drivers and walkers, especially in the third section of the bridge that crosses over Markley Street and the SEPTA railroad tracks:

  • North Side (Sidewalk): A 3.5-foot-tall vertical concrete wall will sit along the raised sidewalk. A 4.25-foot-tall aluminum fence will be added on top of the concrete wall over the tracks and street.
  • South Side (Shared Path): A 3.5-foot-tall concrete barrier will separate the driving lanes from the walking and biking path. A 6.75-foot-tall aluminum fence will line the very outside edge of the path over the tracks and street.
  • Appearance: The concrete walls may feature decorative textures or patterns to match the look of the surrounding neighborhood.
