Throughout the last construction season and into this spring, PennDOT’s contractor successfully relocated all required utilities, constructed the new basin on Greenwood Avenue, and installed a significant portion of the new drainage system. Additionally, the new curb, sidewalk, and stone walls for this stage are under construction and will be completed in the coming weeks. PennDOT anticipates completing Stage 2 paving by the end of May, at which time they will implement Stage 3 traffic control. In Stage 3, traffic on Greenwood Avenue will be shifted onto the newly constructed pavement, while traffic on Church Road will remain in its current configuration. The existing long-term detours will remain in place between Easton Road and Washington Lane, and between Township Line Road and SR309. During Stage 3, the contractor will install new storm drainage, curbs, and sidewalks, and complete full-depth pavement reconstruction on the opposite side of Greenwood Avenue between Church Road and Barker Road, as well as on the westbound side of Church Road between Rices Mill Road and Greenwood Avenue.
The horizontal curve along Church Road will also be eased to enhance visibility and sight distance near the intersection. Coordination with Cheltenham Township has added a sidewalk to the project, providing pedestrian access from nearby homes and Wyncote Elementary School to Curtis Arboretum. Other project improvements include traffic signal replacements, ADA ramps, new pedestrian crosswalks, installation of a new drainage pipe and stormwater management system, replanting trees within Curtis Arboretum, and reconstructing stone walls that will be affected by the project.
Traffic Impacts
Roadway construction will close Route 73 (Church Road) and Greenwood Avenue through July 2026, under a $10.8 million project to improve traffic flow and safety on Route 73 (Church Road) at Greenwood Avenue and Rices Mill Road intersections in Cheltenham Township, Montgomery County.
Motorists are advised of the following travel restrictions:
- Monday, October 10, through Thursday, July 2, 2026, westbound Route 73 (Church Road) will be closed and detoured 24/7 between Rices Mill Road and the Curtis Arboretum entrance. During the closure, motorists will be directed to use Washington Lane, Route 309 (Cheltenham Avenue), Ogontz Avenue, and Easton Road.
- Monday, October 10, through Thursday, July 2, 2026, southbound Greenwood Avenue will be closed and detoured 24/7 between Spruce Lane and Barker Road. During the closure, motorists will be directed to use Township Line Road, Washington Lane, Route 309 (Cheltenham Avenue) and Ogontz Avenue.
- Saturday, February 28, and Sunday, March 1, a 24-hour closure is scheduled on Route 73 (Church Road) between Greenwood Avenue and Route 73 (Washington Lane). During the closure, drivers will be directed to use Greenwood Avenue, Township Line Road, and Route 73 (Washington Lane).
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work areas because backups and delays will occur.
Access to residences and businesses will be maintained at all times, including Hillcrest Center, Reconstructionist Rabinical College, and Curtis Arboretum.
