The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites the public to an online plan display regarding the Route 222 bridge maintenance project.
The project is located over Route 322 (Division Highway) in Ephrata Township, Lancaster County, approximately 2 miles southeast of Ephrata.
The purpose of the project is to perform bridge maintenance activities to extend the service life of the structure and continue to provide a safe crossing for the traveling public.
The project maintenance activities include, but are not limited to: concrete repairs and patching, bearing reset, bridge expansion joint replacements, bridge railing repairs, steel girder repairs, and full bridge painting.
To successfully perform the maintenance activities, short-term lane closures and restrictions can be expected on both Route 222 and 322 during active construction periods.
The project is currently in design and construction is anticipated to take place during the 2027 construction season.

Environmental
The project is located approximately two miles southeast of Ephrata in a suburban setting with the adjacent land use predominantly commercial. No wetlands were located near the existing bridge location. Coordination for the Indiana bat will be included as part of the project. No identified historic resources, public parks, state forests, or state gamelands are located in the vicinity. There is no documented hazardous, residual, or municipal waste near the immediate project area.
Utilities
PennDOT has underground electric lines within the project site. These electric lines are then mounted on the roadway side of both piers’ columns and cap and supply roadway lights power. Concrete repairs to the piers are not anticipated to impact these lines.
Right-of-Way
All maintenance activities will be completed within existing right-of-way.
Maintenance and Protection of Traffic
To successfully perform the maintenance activities, short-term lane closures and restrictions can be expected on both Route 0222 and 0322 during active construction periods.
Schedule and Cost
Construction is anticipated to be during the 2027 construction season at an estimated cost of $1.6 Million.
