Project Overview

County: Northampton
Municipality: Bethlehem Township
State Route: U.S. 22 and Route 191
Project Type: Interchange Reconstruction
MPMS Number: 117606
Proposed Construction Start: Fall 2031
Proposed Construction End: Fall 2034
Last Updated: June 2026

The project involves the reconstruction of the U.S. 22 (Lehigh Valley Thruway) and Route 191 (Nazareth Pike) interchange in Bethlehem Township, Northampton County. Also included in the project area are the intersections of Route 191 and Brodhead Road (east), Route 191 and Brodhead Road (west), and Route 191 and Highfield Drive.

The existing U.S. 22 westbound acceleration lane and U.S. 22 eastbound deceleration lane at Route 191 are substandard in length and will be extended to meet minimum design criteria. The required westbound acceleration lane length will extend across the structures over Norfolk Southern Railroad and Route 191/Monocacy Creek. Neither structure is wide enough to accommodate the width of the acceleration lane, and widening of the existing structures is not possible since the structure over Norfolk Southern Railroad does not meet vertical clearance requirements. The existing structures will be replaced and the profile of U.S. 22 will be raised to meet vertical clearance requirements. Shoulder widths will increase to meet current criteria.

On Route 191, an additional through lane both northbound and southbound will be provided to eliminate the lane drops and inefficient weave conditions that occur between the ramp intersections. A dedicated northbound right turn lane will be provided at the U.S. 22 eastbound and westbound ramp terminal intersections. Dedicated left turn lanes will be provided at the intersections of Route 191 with Highfield Drive, the U.S. 22 eastbound ramps, the U.S. 22 westbound ramps and Brodhead Road. Each of these four intersections will be signalized. New sidewalks will be provided along the corridor.

The Route 191 and Brodhead Road intersection will be reconfigured to a traditional four-way intersection to accommodate the high volume of existing and anticipated truck traffic in the area. The existing at-grade railroad crossing located on Brodhead Road west of Route 191 will be relocated. A new structure over Monocacy Creek will be provided.
