UPDATE: June 2, 2026
Minor Delays Continue through June 5 on U.S. 219 (Flight 93 Memorial Highway) in Somerset County for Boynton Bridge Replacement Project
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is advising drivers of minor delays on U.S. 219 (Flight 93 Memorial Highway) through Friday, June 5, 2026, as the construction of a permanent replacement for the Boynton Bridge continues.
A temporary bridge beside the structure is in place to allow continued traffic during construction. The permanent replacement for the flood-damaged bridge will be built on a direct alignment with U.S. 219 and is expected to be completed in October 2026.
Charles J. Merlo, Inc., Mineral Point, Pa., is the lead contractor for the $2,272,000 project to build a permanent replacement of the Boynton Bridge over Piney Creek. On May 24, 2025, PennDOT reopened U.S. 219 (Flight 93 Memorial Highway) one mile north of Salisbury, Somerset County, just 10 days after the Boynton bridge over Piney Creek was damaged by flooding. The department and contractor partners completed a temporary structure over the creek to restore local travel after floodwaters destroyed the upstream center pier of the 102-year-old bridge in the village of Boynton.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is developing plans for the U.S. 219 Boynton Bridge Over Piney Creek Bridge Replacement Project in Elk Lick Township, Somerset County.
The project consists of a structure replacement, minor roadway approach paving, and upgrading guiderails to meet current standards. A detour will be implemented during construction to relocate the current temporary crossing downstream and adjacent to the existing bridge location. The current plan calls for a three (3) day, weekend detour to shift traffic onto the temporary crossing. Current plans call for work to begin in June or July 2026, with a completion target date of October 2026.
