This is a bridge rehabilitation project of the bridge that carries Route 54 (Montgomery River Bridge) over the West Branch Susquehanna River in Montgomery Borough and Muncy Creek Township, Lycoming County.  

In order to maintain and extend the service life of the bridge, repairs are needed to address the deterioration in the existing curbs and concrete deck overlay. Work includes removal of the existing concrete deck overlay and replacement with a new concrete overlay, complete curb repairs, replacement of expansion joint seal materials to protect the ends of the existing steel beams from water and salt, minor bridge approach work, and line painting. 

July 24, 2026 UPDATE: 

BRIDGE CLOSURE BEGINS MONDAY, AUGUST 3

Drivers are advised that a bridge rehabilitation project is set to begin on the bridge carrying Route 54 over the West Branch Susquehanna River in Montgomery Borough and Muncy Creek Township, Lycoming County.

Starting on Monday, August 3, Route 54 will be closed between 1^st Street in Montgomery Borough and River Road in Muncy Creek Township, while the contractor begins removing the existing bridge deck. Additional work includes curb repairs, replacement of joint seals, replacement of bridge deck, approach work, and line painting.

A detour using Route 54, Interstate 180, and Route 405 will be in place for the duration of the bridge work.

Drivers should be alert, slow down, expect delays in travel, and drive with caution.

April 16, 2026 UPDATE
Starting on Monday, April 20, the contractor, J.D. Eckman, Inc., will have a crew surveying the bridge in preparation for the upcoming rehabilitation. Drivers can anticipate single lane conditions during daylight hours.

Starting on Monday, August 3, Route 54 will be closed between 1st Street in Montgomery Borough and River Road in Muncy Creek Township.

Car Detour
A detour using Route 54, Interstate 180, and Route 405 will be in place for the duration of the bridge work.

Bicycle Route J and Amish using Musser Lane (Route 1001)
A detour using Musser Lane (Route 1001) in Lycoming and Northumberland counties, Main Street (Route 2014) in Muncy Borough, and Water Street (Route 405) in Muncy Borough, Muncy Creek and Clinton Townships, and Montgomery Borough.

The project was advertised for bidding in late 2025. Construction is anticipated to begin August 3, 2026 and be completed in fall 2026.  Construction is restricted between February 15 through July 31, due to a Falcon that resides near the river bridge.

J.D. Eckman, Inc. is the prime contractor for this $1.9 million bridge rehabilitation project. Work includes removal of a portion of the existing concrete deck overlay and replacement with a new concrete overlay, complete curb repairs, replacement of expansion joint seal materials to protect the ends of the existing steel beams from water and salt, minor bridge approach roadway work, and line painting.
