Project Overview
County: Westmoreland
Municipality: Hempfield Township
State Route: T-479
Local Name: Fry Hollow Road
Project Type: Bridge Replacement
MPMS Number: 67722
Proposed Construction Start: April 2028
Proposed Construction End: October 2028
Last Updated: 11/09/2026
The purpose of the project is to correct structural deficiencies of the bridge and to provide safe and efficient crossing of Fry Hollow Road (T-479) over Wilson Run in Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County. The existing structure, Fry Hollow Bridge, was built in 1931 and has an estimated ADT of 165 vehicles with 10% truck traffic. The current structure is in poor condition due to the existing superstructure deterioration and sees frequent vehicular strikes to the bridge barrier. The bridge has a posted weight limit of 13 Tons, Except Combinations 19 Tons, which is driven by the superstructure deterioration. The substructure units exhibit minor spalling and vertical cracking with efflorescence. The current roadway width is 24'-6" and has sharp horizontal curves on both approaches. The structure railing system does not meet current crash standards on the structure itself and a portion of the existing barrier as been damaged beyond repair due to vehicular strikes.
