Project Overview

County: Montgomery
Municipality: Upper Hanover Township
State Route: 1042
Local Name: Church Road
Project Type: Culvert Replacement
MPMS Number: 96069
Last Updated: July 2025

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is replacing the bridge that carries Church Road over a branch of the Perkiomen Creek in Upper Hanover Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. The existing bridge is a 12-foot-long single-span Reinforced Concrete Slab bridge constructed in 1941. The structure is in poor condition and posted with 16 tons, except for combinations with 26-ton weight restrictions.

The proposed scope of work includes the construction of a precast concrete box culvert with a PA 3-rail bridge barrier to replace the existing bridge. The approach roadway will be replaced at full depth, and guide rails will be replaced by current standards. The project also includes the installation of scour protection measures.

All vehicles will be detoured for the construction of this project. Cars and trucks will be detoured using separate detour routes.  The Car detour will be approximately 4.5 miles in length and will use Kutztown Road, Route 663 (Layfield Road), and Route 29 (Gravel Pike). The Truck detour will be approximately 9.1 miles in length and will use Kutztown Road, Route 100 (Pottstown Pike), and Route 29 (Gravel Pike).
