The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announces a Plans Display for a project to replace the State Route 4005 (Meckville Road) bridge over Meck Creek in Bethel Township, Berks County. The purpose of the project is to provide a safe and efficient crossing over Meck Creek with a structure that meets current design standards. The project is currently in the Preliminary Engineering Phase.
The existing structure, which was constructed in 1929, is a single-span encased I-beam bridge. The proposed replacement structure is a precast concrete box culvert (single cell) with precast end sections. The proposed bridge will provide a widened typical section consisting of two (2) 10’-0” travel lanes and 2’-0” shoulders along an improved horizontal alignment. The project will also include the replacement of approach guide rail, approach roadway reconstruction, drainage improvements, minor intersection widening, and signing and pavement marking upgrades.
Meckville Road currently has an average daily traffic volume of 520 vehicles and a posted speed limit of 40 mph. The reconstruction of the bridge will be performed using a full detour. A detour map has been provided, which shows a proposed detour utilizing County Line Road (State Route 4003), William Penn Highway, PA 343, and Pine Grove Road (State Route 1007/4007). Access to driveways within the project limits will be maintained during construction. There are no existing pedestrian or bicycle facilities on or near the project bridge.
The project is anticipated to be constructed during the summer and fall of 2028. All schedules are subject to change.
The purpose of the plans display is to introduce the project and receive public input regarding any questions or concerns with the project. Individuals or groups with a demonstrated interest within the project limits, surrounding businesses, and local property owners that may be affected by the proposed project are encouraged to review the displays and contact us with any questions
