The Commercial Street Bridge Replacement Project utilized Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) Techniques to laterally slide the new bridge onto the existing alignment of I-376 (Parkway East), it was one of the largest lateral slide projects performed in Pennsylvania. The $95 million project located between the Edgewood/Swissvale (Exit 77) interchange and Squirrel Hill Tunnel in Edgewood and Swissvale boroughs, and the City of Pittsburgh began in June of 2024 with the reconstruction of the westbound I-376 off-ramp to Forest Hills/Wilkinsburg (Exit 78B).

A 17-day full closure occurred on I-376 Parkway East for crews to demolish the former bridge and laterally slide the new 22-million-pound bridge into place. The closure began on July 10, 2026, and the parkway reopened to traffic on July 27, 2026, one full week ahead of schedule.

The overall project is anticipated to conclude in the summer of 2027.

Attention Travelers: I-376 Parkway East has reopened to traffic in each direction

The $95 million project is one of the largest of its kind ever performed in Pennsylvania and was completed a week ahead of schedule.

Demolishing the old bridge, laterally sliding in the new bridge, and reopening the roadway were completed in just 17 days.
