Project Overview

County: Berks
Municipality: Greenwich Township
State Route: 4028
Local Name: Old Route 22
Project Type: Bridge Replacement
MPMS Number: 117726
Proposed Construction Start: Spring 2028
Proposed Construction End: Spring 2029
Last Updated: December 2025

This project involves the SR 4028 (Old Route 22) bridge replacement over an Unnamed Tributary to Maiden Creek in Greenwich Township, Berks County. The structure is located approximately ¼ mile east of the Lenhartsville Borough line.

The existing structure is a 58-foot long, two-span reinforced T-beam bridge on reinforced concrete abutments. The existing curb-to-cub width of the bridge is 40 feet. The roadway approaches consist of two 12-foot lanes with 5-foot shoulders.

Route 4028 is classified as Rural Major Collector and has an average daily traffic volume of 4,023 vehicles with 7% truck traffic. The posted speed limit is 45 mph.

The purpose of this project is to provide a safe and efficient crossing of SR 4028 (Old Route 22) with a structure that meets current design standards and can carry legal loads. The bridge was constructed in 1929 and is approaching the end of its effective useful life. It is considered structurally in fair to poor condition. The bridge lacks some minimally acceptable safety features, particularly since it is on the emergency detour route for Interstate 78.

The replacement of the bridge will be constructed in two (2) phases with Phase 1 maintaining one lane of traffic across the existing structure using a one lane alternating traffic flow using temporary traffic signals and temporary barrier. Phase 2 will maintain two lanes of traffic using lane shifts and temporary barrier. A detour of T-813 (Dreibelbis Station Road) is also anticipated throughout the duration of construction. Access to driveways and parking lots within the project limits will be maintained during construction.

Minor widening of the bridge is needed to accommodate traffic control. The bridge will also be lengthened to mitigate any flooding potential.

The project duration is currently planned to last two (2) construction seasons beginning in Spring of 2028. It is anticipated that the majority of construction will be completed in 2028 with final paving occurring in the Spring of 2029.
