The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites the public to an online plan display regarding the Route 222 (Beaver Valley Pike) bridge maintenance project.
The project is located over a tributary to Big Beaver Creek in Strasburg Township, Lancaster County, approximately 4 miles north of Quarryville.
The purpose of the project is to perform bridge maintenance activities to extend the service life of the structure and continue to provide a safe crossing for the traveling public.
The project maintenance activities include, but are not limited to: concrete repairs and patching, wingwall repairs, and wingwall backfill stabilization.
To successfully perform the maintenance activities and allow minimal impacts to the traveling public, construction work will be performed in two stages. Each stage will involve a shift in traffic lanes to the outside shoulder. One lane of traffic will be provided in each direction during construction.
The project is currently in design and construction is anticipated to take place during the 2027 construction season.

Environmental
The project is located approximately four miles north of Quarryville in a rural setting with the adjacent land use predominantly commercial and agricultural. No wetlands were located near the existing bridge location. Coordination for the Indiana bat and northern long-eared bat will be included as part of the project. No identified historic resources, public parks, state forests, or state gamelands are located in the vicinity. There is no documented hazardous, residual, or municipal waste near the immediate project area.
Utilities
PPL, Commonwealth Telephone (Frontier Communications), and Sunesys, Inc have aerial lines that run parallel on the west side of Beaver Valley Pike. Based on the scope of work, no impact is expected to these utilities.
Right-of-Way
All maintenance activities will be completed within existing right-of-way.
Maintenance and Protection of Traffic
To successfully perform the maintenance activities and allow minimal impacts to the traveling public, construction work will be performed in two stages. Each stage will involve a shift in traffic lanes to the outside shoulder. One lane of traffic will be provided in each direction during construction. Temporary concrete barrier will be provided to protect the work zone area.
Schedule and Cost
Construction is anticipated to be during the 2027 construction season at an estimated cost of $300,000.
