Project Overview
County: Westmoreland
Municipality: Hempfield Township
State Route: T-655
Local Name: Rocky Mountain Road
Project Type: Bridge Replacement
MPMS Number: 31706
Proposed Construction Start: May 2028
Proposed Construction End: November 2028
Last Updated: 11/09/2026
The purpose of the project is to correct structural deficiencies of the bridge and to provide safe and efficient crossing of Rocky Mountain Road (T-655) over Little Sewickley Creek in Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County. The existing structure, Rocky Mountain Bridge, was built in 1920 and has an estimated ADT of 556 vehicles with 5% truck traffic. The current structure is in poor condition due to the existing superstructure deterioration and is a one-lane bridge. The bridge has a posted weight limit of 4 Tons, which is driven by the superstructure deterioration. The substructure units exhibit minor spalling and vertical cracking with efflorescence. The current roadway width is 18'-0". The structure railing system does not meet current crash standards on the structure itself.
