The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites the public to virtual and public plans displays regarding the Route 2008 (Middle Road), Section 350 Structure Replacement Project over Espy Run. The public plans display will be held in the Council Chambers at Nanticoke City Hall (15 East Ridge Street, Nanticoke, PA, 18634) on April 1, 2026 beginning at 6:00 PM.
The purpose of the project is to provide a sustainable crossing over Espy Run that provides a two-lane precast reinforced concrete box culvert, addresses structural deficiencies of the existing structure, and provides continued access to local residents, businesses, and emergency services.
The project consists of the replacement of the existing reinforced concrete slab bridge supported on concrete abutments with a precast reinforced concrete box culvert. The permanent approach roadway work will include tie-ins with the existing roadway and guiderail upgrades. Relocations of both aerial and underground utility lines will be necessary to construct the project.
It is anticipated that construction will begin in the spring/summer of 2027 and will be complete by the summer of 2027.
Additional Project Information
Due to a significant presence of wetlands surrounding the project area, a detour will be required to perform the proposed work while minimizing the project footprint. Route 2008 traffic will be detoured using all state roads. The 6.8 mile detour will include Route 2008 (Middle Rd / E. Kirmar Ave), Route 3001 (Robert St / Main St), Route 2002 (Main St / Sans Souci Parkway), Route 29 (South Cross Valley Expressway), and Route 3046 (South Valley Parkway). The maximum duration the detour will contractually be allowed to be in place will be fourteen consecutive calendar days. It is anticipated that the detour will be in place in Summer 2027 when school is not in session.
