The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is currently performing preliminary engineering for Route 22/322 Clark’s Ferry Improvement Project, which includes rehabilitation of the Clark’s Ferry Bridge and Route 0849 Market Street Bridge along with Safety Improvements on Route 22/322 from the Clark’s Ferry Bridge to slightly north of the US 11/15 Interchange in Reed Township Dauphin County and Penn, Watts Township Perry County.

The purpose of the project is to improve safety along the state highway, improve traffic flow and address deficiencies on the bridges to extend the service life of the structures.

Proposed improvements include installing a permanent continuous median barrier on Route 22/322 to separate Eastbound and Westbound traffic within the project limits.  Additional improvements include signing and pavement markings and a westbound frontage lane that would serve local traffic right turning movements.

Clark’s Ferry Bridge proposed scope of work to include deck rehabilitation and overlay, replacing the existing armored compression seals, repairing prestressed beam ends, spot painting, replacing tooth expansion dam and spouting.

Route 849 Market Street proposed scope of work to include repairs to the deteriorated concrete arches, replacement of the existing roadway, concrete slab and fill, constructing a new sidewalk on the downstream side of the structure.  During the Route 849 bridge construction, temporary shuttle service will be provided for Appalachian Trail hikers Monday through Saturday.

The project is currently in preliminary design phase and physical work is anticipated to take place between the 2028 to 2034 construction season subject to all approvals, environmental clearances, and funding availability.
