Municipality: New Salem Borough
State Route: Route 616 and Route 3042
Local Name: Main Street and George Street
Project Type: Intersection Reconstruction
MPMS Number: 116002
Proposed Construction Start: Spring 2028
Proposed Construction End: Fall 2028
Last Updated: June 2025
This project includes realigning the intersection of Route 616 (Main Street) and Route 3042 (George Street) in New Salem Borough, York County, to provide greater sight distance. This will allow signal upgrades which will improve flow and functionality through the intersection.
The intersection of Route 616 (Main Street) and Route 3042 (George Street) are both two-lane highways that intersect in the residential Borough of New Salem. The project limits are about 150 feet north and south of the intersection on Route 616, about 200 feet west of the intersection on Route 3042 and about 250 feet east of the intersection on Route 3042.
The terrain is generally level throughout the project, with the local community center, fuel station, local restaurants, businesses, and residences lining the street. Route 616 has a posted speed limit of 35 mph and Route 3042 has a posted speed limit of 25 mph.
The scope of this project is to reduce congestion at the existing intersection due to the signal timing. This project will realign the Route 3042 roadway through the intersection to increase the efficiency of the signal timing at the intersection. Realignment of the roadway will allow for a two-phase signal to replace the existing three phase signal. The project will include new ADA compliant sidewalks and ramps within the intersection.
The project will be constructed in multiple stages with a detour for thru traffic on Route 3042.
Construction is expected to begin in spring of 2028 and be completed in the fall of 2028.
