    This project is located in Cheltenham Township, Montgomery County, and will improve traffic flow and safety on Route 73 (Church Road) at its intersections with Greenwood Avenue and Rices Mill Road. Proposed project improvements include roadway widening to support left-turn lanes along Route 73 (Church Road) at the intersection of Greenwood Avenue, as well as improvements to Greenwood Avenue near the intersection.  

    The horizontal curvature along Church Road will also be made less severe to improve visibility and sight distance near the intersection. Coordination with Cheltenham Township has added a sidewalk to the project to provide pedestrian access from the adjacent homes and from Wyncote Elementary School to Curtis Arboretum. Additional project improvements include traffic signal replacements, ADA ramps with new pedestrian crosswalks, the installation of a new drainage pipe and stormwater management system, the replanting of trees within Curtis Arboretum, and the reconstruction of stone walls impacted by the project. ​

    The contractor has substantially completed the stage 1, 2, and 3 work, which included the installation of new drainage systems, curb installation, rebuilt stone walls,s and full-depth roadway reconstruction on Greenwood Avenue, between Church Road and Barker Road, and the westbound side of Church Road from the Rices Mill Road intersection to the Curtis Arboretum entrance. 

    Over the coming months, the contractor will continue with the reconstruction of the eastbound side of Church Road from Rices Mill Road to the Curtis Arboretum entrance, as well as with the south leg of Greenwood Avenue, between Church Road and Route 309 (Fort Washington Expressway). During this stage, the contractor will also continue with the construction of the new masonry retaining walls adjacent to the Curtis Arboretum, as well as transplanting new, large trees along the frontage of the arboretum. The contractor will also continue with the installation of new storm drainage, curbs and sidewalks, traffic signals, as well as the full-depth pavement reconstruction. The existing long-term detours will remain in place between Easton Road and Washington Lane, and between Township Line Road and Route 309  (Fort Washington Expressway).

    Traffic Impacts

    Westbound Route 73 (Church Road) and Southbound Greenwood Avenue will remain closed through spring 2027, under a $10.8 million project to improve traffic flow and safety on Route 73 (Church Road) at Greenwood Avenue and Rices Mill Road intersections in Cheltenham Township, Montgomery County.

    Motorists are advised of the following travel restrictions:

    Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work areas because backups and delays will occur. 

    Access to residences and businesses will be maintained at all times, including Hillcrest Center,  Reconstructionist Rabinical College, and Curtis Arboretum.
