Pennsylvania’s NEVI program leads the nation with nearly 50 stations open now and $58 million in federal funds invested.
State College, PA – Today, the Shapiro Administration announced that it will direct $11 million in investments to build electric vehicle (EV) chargers in the Central Pennsylvania region as part of the Community Charging phase of the federal National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, strengthening the Commonwealth’s role as the national leader in the NEVI program. This is the third region where funding has been made available, following announcements in the Southeast and West regions earlier this year. Applications will be accepted until March 12, 2027.
Through the Community Charging funding rounds, the Shapiro Administration is directing over $100 million total in federal funding to build public EV charging stations in Pennsylvania communities, in addition to the $58 million already invested in the Commonwealth’s Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFCs) and Corridor Connections.
"The Shapiro Administration is setting the bar high for states ensuring access to EV chargers," said PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll. “Under the Governor’s leadership, we’re building charger reliability in communities for current and future EV owners.”
Today’s funding announcement builds on the Commonwealth’s leadership in the NEVI program, with nearly 50 stations built using NEVI funds—nearby double the number that any other state has opened. Additionally, there are 41 more stations in various stages of planning and construction.
Since Pennsylvania’s first NEVI station opened in December 2023, NEVI-funded charging stations in Pennsylvania have supported over 146,000 charging sessions, over 17.3 million estimated miles driven, and reduced CO2 emissions by more than 3,700 metric tons.
Community Charging funding is being made available by region: Southeast, East, Central, and West. The Central region consists of Bedford, Blair, Bradford, Cambria, Cameron, Centre, Clearfield, Clinton, Columbia, Elk, Fulton, Huntingdon, Jefferson, Juniata, Lycoming, McKean, Mifflin, Montour, Northumberland, Potter, Snyder, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Tioga, Union, and Wyoming counties. Local transportation planning agencies determine specific areas within the region to prioritize for investment, but all publicly available locations within the region are eligible to apply.
