Traffic Detour Included in Bridge Replacement Project on Route 4001 (West Bakersville-Edie Road) in Somerset County

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is informing motorists that a project to replace the bridge that carries Route 4001 (West Bakersville-Edie Road) over Moore Run will start Monday, July 21, 2025, in Bakersville, Somerset County.

During the first week of construction, crews will begin grading, shoulder and drainage upgrades, and erosion control. This work will be done under daylight flagging operations.

Beginning at midnight, Monday, August 4, traffic will follow a 17.2-mile detour using Route 4001 (West Bakersville-Edie Road), Route 4005 (Coxes Creek Road), and Route 31 (Glades Pike Road). The detour is expected to be lifted at the end of the day on Thursday, August 21.

Cottle’s Asphalt Maintenance, Inc., of Everett, PA is the contractor. Overall work on this $850,000 project is anticipated to end at the beginning of September.

As always, PennDOT stresses extra caution in all work zones. Motorists should drive slowly, eliminate all distractions, and stay alert for direction from advanced signage and flaggers.

Additionally, PennDOT reminds motorists that as of June 5, 2025, the "Paul Miller's Law" is in effect. This law prohibits the use of hand-held devices while driving, even while stopped temporarily due to traffic, a red light, or other momentary delay. Violation of this law is punishable by way of summary citations issued by any Pennsylvania Law Enforcement officer. We strongly urge motorists to make safe choices, put phones out of reach and don’t text and drive.
