Pavement Rehabilitation Project to Continue on Route 581 in Cumberland County

Work to be performed at night with long-term shoulder closures and nighttime lane restrictions on westbound Route 581

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that a 7.14-mile pavement rehabilitation project is scheduled to continue this Sunday night (March 22) on Route581 between Interstate 81 and Interstate 83 in Cumberland County. Work will be performed at night with long-term shoulder closures and nighttime lane restrictions at various locations on westbound Route 581.

Weather permitting, work on westbound Route 581 will begin the night of Sunday, March 22. The contractor will work from 7:00 PM to 6:00 AM Sunday through Thursday nights for about eight weeks.

Long-term right shoulder closures and nighttime lane restrictions will be in place at the following locations on westbound Route 581:

  • between Mile Markers 6.4 and 6.2 (less than a mile east of Route 11/15).
  • between Mile Markers 5.4 and 4.6 (between Route 11/15 and Route 641)
  • between Mile Markers 3.9 and 3.7 (just east of the Route 581 bridge spanning Sporting Hill Road)

Temporary concrete barrier will be placed along the shoulder so new permanent concrete barrier and new reinforced concrete shoulders can be constructed along with new guiderail tie-ins.

Two lanes of travel will be maintained from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

There will be single lane closures from 7:00 PM to 6:00 AM Sunday nights through Thursday nights.

Travelers are reminded to be alert for these operations, to obey work zone signs, and to use caution when driving through work zones for their safety, as well as for the safety of the road crews.

This project consists of concrete patching, diamond grinding and replacement of two traffic counter device locations, and other miscellaneous construction on Route 581 in East Pennsboro, Hampden, and Lower Allen townships, and Camp Hill and Lemoyne boroughs.

Kinsley Construction, LLC, of York, PA, is the contractor on this $15,482,961 project.

All work is expected to be completed by September 8, 2027.
