There will be nighttime lane restrictions on Route 322 to shift westbound lanes.
Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that Milroy Road is expected to reopen next week at the Route 322/Chambers Hill Road Intersection Improvement Project in Swatara Township, Dauphin County. Milroy Road was closed between Route 322 and Grayson Road in March to allow the contractor to complete work on Milroy Road and finish the roundabout at the intersection of Milroy and Grayson roads.
Weather permitting, Milroy Road is expected to open at approximately 1:00 AM Tuesday, June 23. The roundabout under construction at the intersection of Milroy Road and Grayson Road also will open to traffic.
Once the detour is lifted, westbound Route 322 traffic may turn right onto Milroy Road. Traffic on Chambers Hill Road will have the option of turning left onto westbound Route 322, going straight onto Milroy Road, or turning right onto eastbound Route 322. Milroy Road will include two left turn lanes to eastbound Route 322, and a lane for either going straight onto Chambers Hill Road or turning right onto westbound Route 322.
In addition to opening Milroy Road, the contractor will implement nighttime lane restrictions on eastbound and westbound Route 322 so traffic on westbound Route 322 can be shifted to the right.
Eastbound and westbound Route 322 will be restricted from 7:00 PM Monday, June 22, to 6:00 AM Tuesday, June 23, from the Swatara Creek Bridge to Witmer Road. The contractor will begin the traffic shift and also install three new mast arms for traffic signals at the Chambers Hill Road intersection.
There will be lane restrictions on eastbound and westbound Route 322 from 9:00 PM Tuesday, June 23, to 6:00 AM Wednesday, June 24, so the traffic shift can be completed.
After traffic is shifted, the Route 322 median will be closed for reconstruction and drainage work. This work will be performed from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM Sunday through Thursday nights until completed. Travelers should be alert for construction vehicles entering and exiting the median work zone.
This work is part of the reconstruction of the intersection of Route 322 with Grayson Road and Chambers Hill Road in Swatara Township.
The Route 322 signalized intersection with Grayson Road and Chambers Hill Road (Route 3006) is being reconstructed to four approaches with left-turn lanes removed from Route 322.
One through lane will be added in each direction of Route 322. Eastbound Route 322 left turns have been replaced with the new jug handle and signal at Witmer Road. Westbound Route 322 left turns will be replaced with a new roundabout and bypass lanes at the intersection with Milroy Road and Grayson Road.
Construction of three retaining walls will accommodate the widening and geometry, as well as the addition of dynamic message signs, stormwater management basins, drainage, guiderail, barrier, signs and upgraded pavement markings, and other miscellaneous construction.
This project is expected to be completed by August 18, 2027. J.D. Eckman, Inc., of Atglen, PA, is the prime contractor on this $38,561,349 project.
