Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites the public to an online plans display regarding the Bunker Hill Road (Route 2029) superstructure replacement project over Little Beaver Creek in Strasburg Township, Lancaster County. The purpose of the project is to replace the existing superstructure and repair the existing substructure.
The existing structure was built in 1938 and is a single span, non-composite, steel I-beam bridge with a reinforced concrete deck supported on stone masonry abutments. The existing bridge skew is approximately 90-degrees, and the existing bridge length is approximately 55 feet.
The existing superstructure will be replaced with a single span, composite steel I-beam superstructure with a reinforced concrete deck slab and parapets. The substructure work will include repairs to the existing stone masonry abutments. Additional work includes utility relocations, reconstruction of the pavement on the roadway approaches, guiderail upgrades, and rock placement around the bridge substructure for scour protection. The proposed curb-to-curb width of the bridge is 21 feet-7 ½ inches.
This section of Bunker Hill Road carries a daily traffic volume of 984 vehicles per day. Environmental activities completed include a wetlands study, bog turtle survey, environmental due diligence form, and historic eligibility surveys for three properties.
The proposed construction schedule is approximately 6 months with the bridge closed to traffic. The proposed 3.7-mile detour will utilize Weaver Road, May Post Office Road and Shaub Road. Access to all driveways within the project limits will be maintained during construction.
A digital version of the project plans and information are available to view online with public comments accepted through November 24, 2025.
