Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites the public to an online plans display regarding the Route 4004 (Straws Church Road) deck replacement project over Conley’s Creek in Jackson Township, Dauphin County, approximately 6 miles northeast of Halifax. The purpose of this project is to ensure continued efficient access for the traveling public and support the long-term reliability of the transportation infrastructure.
The project involves replacing the current bridge deck, repaving the areas where the road connects to the bridge and installing new guide rail for improved safety. The existing 42-foot curb-to-curb width will be slightly reduced to a 40-foot 10¼-inch curb to curb width consisting of two 11-foot lanes and two 9-foot 5⅛-inch width shoulders to accommodate the proposed bridge barriers.
This section of Straws Church Road has an average daily traffic volume of 121 vehicles per day.
The bridge will be closed to all traffic for approximately 3 months during construction. The detour will be approximately 4.5-mile utilizing Route 4001 (Rutter Road), Route 1004 (Millers Church Road) and Route 1003 (Mountain House Road).
No utilities are expected to be affected within the Limits of Work of the project.
The project is currently in design and construction work is anticipated to begin in July 2027 and last approximately 3 months.
The purpose of the plans display is to introduce the project and solicit public input, questions, or concerns regarding the project.
A digital version of the information will be available to view online, with a comment period through October 13, 2025.
