Long-Term Closure Scheduled for 19th Street Ramp to NB I-83 in City of Harrisburg

Closure set for the night of Sunday, Aug. 24; Rolling stops planned that night for NB I-83 for sign structure work

Harrisburg, PA
– The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that the ramp from 19th Street to northbound Interstate 83 in the City of Harrisburg will be closed the night of Sunday, August 24. This will be a long-term closure that will be in place until the new 19th Street bridge and interchange is constructed as part of the I-83 Capital Beltway Project.

Weather permitting, the ramp will be closed at approximately 9:00 PM Sunday, August 24. A long-term detour will be in place. Travelers should take Paxton Street east to 32nd Street, turn left on 32nd Street, then turn right at Wayne Street and proceed to the ramp to northbound I-83.

This closure will be in place until the 19th Street bridge is replaced, and a new northbound ramp is constructed on a new alignment.

In addition to the ramp closure, there will be rolling stops the night of Sunday, August 24, on northbound I-83 so sign structure work can be performed. There will be rolling stops of up to 15 minutes in the northbound direction between the hours of midnight and 5:00 AM Monday morning.

Motorists should be alert and watch for stopped or slow-moving vehicles.

This work is part of the first of two contracts for East Shore Section 3 of the Interstate 83 Capital Beltway Project.

This contract includes widening and reconstructing portions of the I-83 roadway, construction of overhead bridges at 29th Street and 19th Street, construction of the new Cameron Street Interchange, removing the 13th Street interchange, and roadway improvements along the Cameron Street, 19th Street and 29th Street corridors.

There may be significant impacts to traffic during the life of this project, including traffic shifts, lane restrictions and road closures/detours. Advance notice will be issued prior to any major traffic impacts.

New Enterprise Stone and Lime Company, Inc., of New Enterprise, PA, is the contractor on this $154,627,000 project.

All work on this contract is expected to be completed by October 12, 2027.
