Philadelphia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that construction will close Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) at night next week under the $148.9 million project to rehabilitate the bridges that carry Market Street over Amtrak and I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway), the Schuylkill River Trail, and CSX Railroad in Center City Philadelphia.
Drivers are advised of the following travel restrictions:
- Monday, August 31, and Tuesday, September 1, from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, I-76 West will be closed between the 30th Street and Interstate 676 interchanges.
- Wednesday, September 2, and Thursday, September 3, from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, I-76 East will be closed between 30th Street and South Street interchanges.
During westbound I-76 closures, drivers will exit at Walnut Street and follow Schuylkill Avenue to the ramps to I-76 and I-676.
During eastbound I-76 closures, drivers will be directed to exit at Arch Street/30th Street, turn left onto Chestnut Street, and turn right on Schuylkill Avenue to the I-76 East on-ramp at Walnut Street.
Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work areas or along the detour routes because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.
Travelers are reminded that the Market Street Bridge over the Schuylkill River is closed for approximately 14 months for rehabilitation.
PennDOT’s is replacing the Market Street bridges over Amtrak and I-76, repairing and redecking the Market Street Bridge over the Schuylkill River, and replacing the Market Street bridge over the Schuylkill River Trail and CSX Railroad on the east side of the river.
