Philadelphia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that construction will begin on Monday, January 5, on a project to improve safety at the Columbus Boulevard, Packer Avenue, and Delaware Avenue intersections in South Philadelphia.
Under this contract, the contractor will widen and improve the intersections of Columbus Boulevard, Packer Avenue, and Delaware Avenue, as well as the at-grade railroad crossing. The work includes excavation for a new concrete sidewalk with detectable warning surfaces, installation of new foundations for signal poles and overhead signs, relocation of utilities, and reconstruction of the roadway. Additionally, trenching will be required along South Christopher Columbus Boulevard and South Delaware Avenue, as well as a jack-and-bore operation to cross under the railroad tracks.
Beginning Monday, January 5, through Tuesday, September 15, a 24/7 lane closure will be in place on the following intersections:
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work areas because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.
Road-Con, Inc. of West Chester, PA, is the general contractor on the $8.8 million project, which is financed with 100 percent state funds. Physical construction on the project is expected to finish in the fall of 2026.
