PennDOT, City of Philadelphia, SEPTA to Host Public Meeting for Castor Avenue Traffic Safety and Beautification Project

Philadelphia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), the City of Philadelphia, and SEPTA invite the public to attend an Open House on Wednesday, May 14, at 4:00 PM, followed by a Town Hall at 5:00 PM to learn about the upcoming Castor Avenue Traffic Safety and Beautification Project. The events will take place at the Northeast High School Cafeteria at 1601 Cottman Avenue in Philadelphia.

This meeting offers citizens an opportunity to discuss the project with representatives from PennDOT, the City, and SEPTA, ask questions and learn about the future of Castor Avenue.

The Castor Avenue Traffic Safety and Beautification Project aims to improve safety along a 1.7-mile stretch of Castor Avenue, from north of Oxford Circle to Cottman Avenue (Route 73). This area is part of Philadelphia’s High Injury Network, identified in the 2020 Vision Zero Action Plan. Some of the main safety concerns for this corridor are angle crashes, drivers running red lights, and crashes involving pedestrians.

The proposed project would include reallocating the existing four lanes along the Castor Avenue corridor to one lane in each direction with a center turn lane. New raised curb extensions and boarding islands will be added for SEPTA stops, and sidewalk-level bike lanes will be added to reduce conflicts with vehicles. The project will also upgrade traffic signals, improve sidewalks, provide pedestrian scale lighting, and enhance landscaping features along the corridor.
