The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is providing an early June to mid-June update for its Atherton Street (Route 3014) project in State College The work zone stretches from Curtin Road to just north of Westerly Parkway. PennDOT anticipates the completion of this three-year project in the fall of 2024.
Area motorists can expect the following from June 9 through June 16:
On Friday, June 9, a new traffic pattern will shift westbound traffic into the two left lanes from Beaver Avenue to Clay Lane. At Clay Lane, traffic will shift back to the two right lanes. Motorists should proceed through this area with caution. During daylight hours, a flagger will be in the roadway to facilitate vehicle movements.
Monday, June 12 through Thursday, June 15, one crew will be installing sewer line from West Foster Avenue to West Fairmont Avenue. An alternating traffic pattern will be enforced by roadway flaggers.
Monday, June 12 through Friday, June 16, two crews will be working between College Avenue and Beaver Avenue excavating the existing roadway surface and installing new drainage items. This work will be within the already closed lanes and would not further restrict the flow of traffic.
Monday, June 12 through Friday, June 16, one crew will be working at the College Avenue intersection installing foundations for new traffic signals and highway lighting.
The eastbound closure (both eastbound lanes) on Atherton Street between College Avenue and Beaver Avenue remains in place. This closure is necessary to install new drainage. Eastbound traffic is diverted at College Avenue and uses the Atherton Street downtown detour (North Atherton, West College Avenue, Buckhout Street, Beaver Avenue, South Atherton). This eastbound detour will be in place until early July. One lane of westbound Atherton Street will remain open through the duration of this work. Access to the Graduate Hotel is from the westbound lane.
Through early July, the left lane of Beaver Avenue remains closed from H Alley to Atherton Street and the left lane of College Avenue remains closed from Burrowes Road to Atherton Street.
Message boards remain in place alerting motorists to the closures.
A pedestrian detour remains in place. PennDOT reminds pedestrians to use that detour and avoid walking through the construction zone.
Please pay attention to work zone and directional signage to enhance safety and keep traffic moving efficiently.

Overall project work will include roadway reconstruction, drainage improvements that include pipes and inlets, water and sewer lines, concrete curbing, sidewalks and detectable warning surfaces, pavement markings, traffic signals and supports, and miscellaneous items.
HRI, Inc. of State College is the contractor on this $30.7 million job. PennDOT reminds drivers all work is weather and schedule dependent.
PennDOT reminds motorists that traffic may be stopped intermittently for short periods during work activities. Please use caution when traveling through the work zone and do not follow construction equipment into the closed lane. When approaching the work zone, use both lanes to the merge point to minimize traffic back-ups and shorten travel delays.
