PennDOT Closing I-80 Westbound at Bellefonte Starting at 10:00 PM

Clearfield, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) said it is closing Interstate 80 westbound for vehicle recovery operations at 10:00 PM at the site of a commercial vehicle crash that occurred near the 161/Bellefonte exit at approximately 5:30 AM.

While the closure is in place, traffic on I-80 westbound will be directed off the Interstate at exit 178/Lock Haven and then follow Route 220 northbound to Route 150 southbound to reconnect with Interstate 80 at Milesburg. This detour is known as the “Brown” detour, and there is signage posted along the route. Local traffic familiar with the area may choose alternate routes.

Message boards along I-99 northbound will display messages urging drivers attempting to connect with I-80 westbound to take exit 78A/150 South and follow it to reconnect with I-80 at Milesburg. I-99 northbound traffic will not be permitted to access I-80 westbound at Bellefonte and will be directed onto I-80 eastbound.

Additionally, PennDOT’s regional traffic management center is supporting this operation by populating the information into 511PA and activating its variable message boards along the interstates and detour route.

PennDOT said it expects the closure to be in place until at least midnight. All schedules are subject to change.

Motorists can check conditions on major roadways by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information, and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras. 511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional X alerts.
