    Westbound I-376 Parkway East “Bathtub” Flood Control Improvement Project Preparatory Work to Begin Thursday in Pittsburgh

    Ramp closures, long-term lane restriction to be implemented starting October 3.

    Pittsburgh, PA –The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is announcing the start of the $14.34 million flood control project on westbound (inbound) I-376 (Parkway East) in the “Bathtub” area in the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County will begin Thursday, October 1 weather permitting.

    To accommodate the installation of traffic control signage, there will be short-term mobile single-lane restrictions on westbound I-376 (Parkway East) between the north Route 885/Oakland (Exit 73A) interchange and the Fort Pitt Bridge from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM Thursday and Friday nights, October 1-2.

    Additionally, beginning at 8:00 PM Saturday night, October 3 the following restrictions are expected to be implemented around-the-clock through August 2027:

    • The Grant Street on-ramp to westbound I-376 will close to traffic.
      • The westbound I-376 left-hand off-ramp to Grant Street (Exit 71A) will remain open.
    • The westbound I-376 left-hand off-ramp to Stanwix Street (Exit 70D) will close to traffic.
      • The Stanwix Street on-ramp to westbound I-376 will remain open.
    • A long-term left-hand lane closure will be implemented on westbound I-376 between the closed Grant Street on-ramp and the left-hand on-ramp from Stanwix Street.
      • The right-hand exit lane to the Ft. Duquesne Bridge will be shortened to allow two lanes of through-traffic to the Ft. Pitt Bridge.
      • No lane restrictions are anticipated on eastbound I-376 Parkway East in this corridor related to this project.

    • From Grant Street turn right onto Ft. Pitt Boulevard
    • Continue to the intersection with Stanwix Street
    • Turn left toward the ramp for west I-376/Ft. Pitt Bridge/Airport
    • Bear right to continue on the ramp for west I-376/Ft. Pitt Bridge/Airport
    • End detour

    Westbound I-376 to Stanwix Street (Exit 70D)

    • From westbound I-376 take the left-hand off-ramp to Grant Street (Exit 71A)
    • Turn left onto Ft. Pitt Boulevard
    • Continue to Stanwix Street
    • End detour

    Please allow extra time and use caution if traveling on this roadway. Work zone safety is everyone’s responsibility.

    The “bathtub” area of the Parkway East, located between the Grant Street (Exit 71A) interchange and the Fort Pitt Bridge, has experienced increased closures due to flooding over the past decade. Each closure diverts approximately 43,000 vehicles and costs a significant amount of money and time to allow crews to conduct clean-up activities once the river recedes, which includes pumping the water and cleaning out mud and debris from the area in order to reopen the road. This project aims to reduce the frequency of flooding events and improve maintenance response time afterwards.

    This $14.34 million project along westbound I-376 (Parkway East) within the City of Pittsburgh will include work to reconstruct and raise 1,150 feet of existing floodwall to reduce the frequency of flooding events between the Grant Street (Exit 71A) interchange and the Fort Pitt Bridge. Work includes the installation of micropiles to strengthen the existing structural foundation under the roadway, full pavement replacement, and repairing and upgrading the existing pump and piping systems. A long-term single-lane restriction and ramp closures, as well as Mon Wharf parking area impacts, will be in place for majority of the project with possible weekend closures and lane restrictions. During the 2027 construction season, travelers can expect a 12-day full closure and detour of westbound I-376 for full-width concrete pavement reconstruction. The overall project is expected to conclude in the fall of 2027. Golden Triangle Construction Company is the prime contractor.
