Shapiro Administration Launches Specialized 511PA Website to Help Travelers Navigate I-376 (Parkway East) Closure in Pittsburgh Between July 10 and August 3

The new web page will help drivers navigate congestion and view average drive times during the Commercial Street Bridge Closure on I-376 (Parkway East).

Accelerated construction reduces significant traffic impacts from more than four years to just 25 days.

Harrisburg, PA – Ahead of the 25-day closure of the Interstate 376 Commercial Street Bridge, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is encouraging drivers to plan their trip using the enhanced real-time travel information available on a specialized webpage at https://www.511pa.com/map/page/CommercialStBridge. These enhancements support Governor Josh Shapiro’s commitment to providing accessible, real-time digital services to every Pennsylvanian.

Hosted through the department's www.511PA.com traveler information website, the page is dedicated to monitoring traffic conditions on primary travel routes to events and around the greater Pittsburgh area.

“This project puts Pennsylvania on the map for innovative, accelerated construction. While the closure is short-term, the benefits will last for generations,” said PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll. “We encourage all travelers to use 511PA for real-time updates and detour times so they can move through the area efficiently.”

The new webpage includes links to traffic maps with travel time for primary routes around the City of Pittsburgh, as well as other helpful links and travel tips for navigating the closure. Users can see real-time incidents, construction, traffic cameras, traffic speeds, and message board displays on the maps.

Travelers using the “My Routes” option will also have access to a list of special points of interest when choosing their starting point or destination, making it easier than ever to find the best route around the closure.

PennDOT's Western Regional Traffic Management Center is also supporting the project by posting real-time travel information on changeable message signs. PennDOT will be utilizing cameras in the area and throughout the closure to enhance monitoring of current traffic conditions, as well as message boards to help direct travelers.

Travelers in and around the greater Pittsburgh area should be prepared for changing traffic patterns, slow-moving or stopped vehicles, and an increase in traffic on the detour routes. Carpooling or using public transit should be considered to reduce traffic and make travelers’ commute less stressful. Information about additional Park & Ride locations, detour maps and directions are available at Commercial Street Bridge.

Construction on the Commercial Street Bridge Replacement Project began in June 2024 with the reconstruction of the westbound I-376 off-ramp to Forest Hills/Wilkinsburg (Exit 78B). Previous work included temporary and permanent piers, abutments, and piles for temporary and permanent foundations, steel delivery and erection, and the continuation of phased ITS work. To reduce the impact on traffic, Commercial Street and the Nine Mile Run Trail below the interstate bridge were temporarily relocated while most of the work occurred. The overall project is anticipated to be completed in summer 2027.

To help keep travelers informed as work progresses, PennDOT has created an email distribution list for Parkway East traffic advisories and construction updates. Enroll by clicking on the Parkway East online sign-up form link and entering your email address.

Updates can also be found on the Commercial Street Bridge webpage, by following PennDOT’s regional X page @511PAPittsburgh or joining the Greater Pittsburgh Area PennDOT Facebook group.
