Pittsburgh, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is announcing the current phase of Route 51 (Clairton Boulevard) work zone traffic control devices in Pleasant Hills and Jefferson Hills boroughs, Allegheny County will be removed Sunday, September 27 weather permitting.
Intermittent lane restrictions and traffic stoppages controlled by flaggers will begin at approximately 7:00 AM Sunday on Route 51 in both directions between Lewis Run Road and Mall Drive. Crews will conduct temporary line painting operations and traffic control device (channelizer) removal work. Once this work has been completed, Route 51 will have two lanes of traffic in both directions between Coal Valley Road and the Lebanon Church Road/Curry Hollow Road interchange until the 2027 construction season begins in the spring. The restrictions could be lifted earlier if the work is completed sooner.
To accommodate preparatory work for milling and paving operations, there will be mobile single-lane restrictions on Route 51 between Coal Valley Road and the Lebanon Church Road/Curry Hollow Road interchange Monday through Friday, September 28-October 2 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Only one lane will be restricted at a time.
Additionally, Route 51 will be reduced to a single-lane of traffic in both directions between Coal Valley Road and Fred Fiore Drive from 8:00 PM Friday, October 2 continuously through 5:00 AM Monday, October 5 for final milling and paving and line painting operations. The restrictions could be lifted earlier if the work is completed sooner.
This $19.85 million roadway project on Clairton Boulevard includes milling and resurfacing, concrete replacement, bridge preservation work on three structures (two structures over Lewis Run and one structure over Lebanon Church Road), drainage work, guide rail improvements, ADA curb ramp updates, PRT bus stop improvements, signing and pavement marking installation, and other miscellaneous construction activities. Also included is an adaptive traffic signal project that will provide upgrades to 24 intersections, including full signal replacement at nine intersections, from Peters Creek Road in Jefferson Hills Borough to Stewart Avenue in the City of Pittsburgh. Up to one-mile-long single-lane restrictions will occur in each direction limiting left-turn movements except for at signalized intersections. Detours for the left-turn movements will be posted. The project is anticipated to conclude in 2028.
