    I-279, Route 65 Utility Location Work Begins Monday Night in Pittsburgh

    This work is part of the Fort Duquesne Bridge Preservation Project.

    Pittsburgh, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is announcing utility location work for the Fort Duquesne Bridge (I-279) and associated ramps preservation project in the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County will begin Monday night, September 14 weather permitting.

    To allow crews to locate utilities within the corridor, mobile single-lane restrictions will occur from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM each night through Friday, September 25 in the following locations:

    • Northbound and southbound I-279 Fort Duquesne Bridge
    • Northbound and southbound I-279 between Route 28 and Route 65
    • Northbound and southbound Route 65 between the West End Bridge and the merge with I-279
    • The ramps that carry Route 65 traffic to and from the Fort Duquesne Bridge
    • The ramp from Fort Duquesne Bridge to Reedsdale Street/North Shore (Exit 1B)

    Overnight closures are not permitted on the nights of any events at the North Shore stadiums and PPG Paints Arena. However, single-lane restrictions may occur two hours after any event.

    Please stay alert and drive cautiously – safety is everyone’s responsibility.

    Preservation work on this $12.17 million project on the I-279 Fort Duquesne Bridge and associated Route 65 ramps in the City of Pittsburgh began in June of 2026. Work will include steel repairs, spot painting, expansion dam and joint replacements, deck repairs, drainage improvements, deck and barrier sealing, pavement marking and delineator updates, and other miscellaneous construction activities. The majority of the work that will impact the roadways will occur during off-peak hours and non-major event calendar days but will require some overnight and weekend closures and detours, a one-week closure and detour of the I-279 left-hand off-ramp to North Shore (Exit 1B) and an anticipated two-week closure and detour of westbound Reedsdale Street. Other offline work is anticipated to occur outside of major events. The project is anticipated to conclude in the fall of 2027. Swank Construction Company, LLC is the prime contractor.
