State Route: 216-025
Local Name: Blooming Grove Road
Project Type: Bridge Preservation
MPMS Number: 21076
Proposed Construction Start: May 2026
Proposed Construction End: July 2026
Last Updated: September 2025

The Route 216 bridge preservation project is located along Blooming Grove Road (Route 216) over Lake Marburg in Penn and West Manheim Townships, York County, approximately 4 miles east of Hanover. The purpose of this project is to preserve the life of the existing bridge and provide a continued safe and efficient crossing of Route 216 over Lake Marburg.

The existing five-span prestressed concrete multi-I-beam bridge was built in 1967 and over the years the deck wearing surface and bridge deck joints have deteriorated and are no longer functioning as intended.

The project involves performing bridge preservation work consisting of replacing the bridge deck joints, repairing any deck deterioration, providing a new wearing surface, mill and overlay the approach roadways and new pavement markings. Additionally, asphalt sidewalk ramps will be constructed at each end of the bridge along the left side. The current roadway geometry will remain unchanged with 12-foot lanes and 4-foot shoulders.

This section of Route 216 has an average daily traffic volume of 9008 vehicles per day (vpd).

The bridge will be closed to all traffic for approximately 2 months during construction. The detours are short term.  If detoured during the tourist season (May through September) Tuesday to Thursday detours will be used. If detoured outside the tourist season (October through April), a weekend detour will be used.  The detour will be approximately 7.9 miles using Grandview Road (Route 3068), Black Rock Road (Route 3070), Hobart Road (Route 3058), and Blue Hill Road (Route 3037). Please refer to the project’s Detour Plan graphic.

Utilities are present at the site, located within the sidewalk and attached to the underside of the structure overhangs. These facilities will remain undisturbed during construction. There are no overhead utilities present at the site.

The project is currently in design, and construction work is anticipated to begin in Spring 2026 and last approximately 2 months.

The purpose of the plans display is to introduce the project and solicit public input, questions, or concerns regarding the project
