Construction to replacement the bridge on Route 6 over French Creek in Hayfield and Woodcock townships, Crawford County is expected to startMarch 23, 2026, weather permitting.
This bridge is located between the intersection with the Morris Road and the intersection with Black Road, approximately 2 miles southwest of Saegertown.
It will be replaced with a concrete structure with 11-foot travel lanes and 5-foot shoulders. The roadway elevation will be adjusted 225 feet from the southern end and 50 feet of the northern end of the bridge. In addition, Morris Road and Brake Shoe Road, which are township roads near the southern side of the bridge, will be adjusted to match Route 6.
Major construction is expected to start April 6, 2026, weather permitting, and to be completed by December 2026.
The existing through-truss bridge was built in 1937. It is classified as poor condition and has a vehicle clearance of 14 feet. Repairs were made to the bridge in 2019 after it was damaged by an over-height vehicle. Approximately 7,100 vehicles a day use the bridge, on average.
The contractor is Francis J. Palo, Inc. of Clarion. The contractor cost is $6,933,024, which will be paid entirely with state funds.

Traffic Impacts
Starting April 6, 2026, vehicle traffic will be rerouted to I-79 and Route 198. Access to adjacent local roads will be maintained during the roadway closure.
A bicycle detour will be posted using Route 198, Park Avenue Extension (Route 1001), and East Cole Road.
French Creek Access
Access to the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission boat access area will be maintained throughout construction. There will be no permanent impacts to the area.
An Aids-to-Navigation (ATON) Plan was implemented to maintain use of the French Creek water trail during construction. The ATON Plan provides a safe navigation channel during most periods of construction. When certain overhead demolition and construction activities do not permit safe use of the navigation channel, a safe portage route around the construction area will be designated.
