New awards increase the number of EV chargers available in the Southeastern region by 27%, including a 53% increase in Philadelphia.
Philadelphia, PA – Today, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Secretary Mike Carroll announced a $37 million investment to build more publicly accessible electric vehicle (EV) chargers in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties as part of the Community Charging phase of the federal National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program. This investment will bring 515 new public EV charging ports online in the region to support growing demand for EV infrastructure.
Through the Community Charging funding rounds, the Shapiro Administration is directing over $100 million total in federal funding to build public EV charging stations in Pennsylvania communities, in addition to the $58 million already invested in the Commonwealth’s Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFCs) and Corridor Connections.
Today’s funding announcement builds on the Commonwealth’s leadership in the NEVI program, with 54 stations built using NEVI funds — more than double the number that any other state has opened. Additionally, there are 34 more stations in various stages of planning and construction.
"The Shapiro Administration hit the ground running with EV funding and the results speak for themselves," said PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll. “Under the Governor’s leadership, Delaware Valley residents and travelers will soon have access to more than 500 new EV chargers in their communities.

Community Charging funding is being made available by region: Southeastern, Eastern, Central, and Western. Local transportation planning agencies determine specific areas within the region to prioritize for investment, but all publicly available locations within the region are eligible to apply.
“These awards expand opportunity for southeastern PA visitors and residents alike by reducing range anxiety for current EV owners and making EV ownership possible for others,” said Ariella Maron, Executive Director of the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission. “DVRPC applauds PennDOT’s leadership in expanding transportation options across Pennsylvania and serving as a national leader in NEVI implementation.”
“This grant will expand access to EV charging across Philadelphia and help grow ChargePHL, our public charging program” said Christopher Puchalsky, Director of Policy and Strategic Initiatives for the City of Philadelphia’s Office of Transportation and Infrastructure Systems. “We are committed to ensuring residents in every neighborhood have access to reliable, safe, and sustainable transportation options that connect them to jobs, schools, and loved ones. By investing in EV infrastructure, we’re supporting job opportunities in the growing clean energy sector, while bringing convenient charging opportunities to more communities. We are grateful to PennDOT for its partnership in building a greener Philadelphia”
Community Charging Funding Opportunities are open in the Western, Central, and Eastern regions. For closing dates, please visit our website. Organizations in the remaining regions are encouraged to fill out a PennDOT survey to connect with builders and operators to partner with on submissions. More information on Community Charging, as well as the survey, is available now at www.pa.gov/evcommunity.
Since Pennsylvania’s first NEVI station opened in December 2023, NEVI-funded charging stations in Pennsylvania have supported over 183,000 charging sessions, over 21.6 million estimated miles driven, and reduced CO2 emissions by about 4,600 metric tons.
To help demystify EVs and provide clear, fact-based information, PennDOT recently launched a video series, EVs In Focus. Topics include EV battery fires, demands on the electric grid, real-world environmental impacts of driving an EV, winter weather and the cost of charging.
