With snow in the forecast for the first time this season, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is reminding motorists to be prepared and slow down during inclement weather.
"Our crews have been working to ready our equipment and supplies to respond as the weather dictates both today and in the coming months, said Aaron Fox, PennDOT Assistant District 1 Executive - Maintenance. "Whether they are a 25-year veteran of the department or an employee hired through a recent job fair, our plow truck operators have received their assigned routes and are prepared to work overnight shifts as needed to keep the roads safe and passable."
All the counties included in District 1, which encompasses Crawford, Erie, Forest, Mercer, Venango, and Warren, have started doing preventative maintenance, mounting plows on the dump trucks, prepping other equipment, and stockpiling salt, anti-skid and other materials, which are in good supply for the coming winter season.
"When it comes to winter roadway maintenance, PennDOT focuses on providing safe and passable roadways," said District 1 Executive Brian McNulty, P.E. "Our detailed approach to how that is done varies based on the type of storm and the changes within the weather. This means that roads may not be free of snow while precipitation is falling but we will continue to maintain all the state-owned roadways until the storm has passed and they are cleared."
Plow routes in District 1 can vary in length from 25 to 70 miles and can take between one and four hours to complete depending on traffic volume, weather conditions, and other factors. Priority is typically give to roadways with the highest traffic volume, such as interstates, followed by other major roads, such as Route 62 or Route 8, and then rural routes.
In District 1, PennDOT maintains 8,422 snow lane miles through the hard work of about 360 operators and 36 mechanics. The department is seeking additional licensed CDL equipment operators, mechanics, welders and clerks for temporary and full-time positions. "We ask the public to remember that safety is the responsibility of everyone using the roadways. When driving in winter weather, it is important to travel at a speed that is safe for the conditions, turn your headlights on, and don't follow too closely behind a plow truck," Fox said.
Motorists should do their part to prepare for potential wintry weather by allowing additional time in their commute and ensuring they have supplies in their vehicles, including food, water, blankets, extra gloves and hats, cell phone charger, hand or foot warmers, windshield brush and scraper, and any specialized items like medications or baby and pet supplies.
