Philadelphia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that construction will occur at night next week on the northbound I-95 Girard Point Bridge and its approaches under a $261.5 million, two-phase contract to rehabilitate the bridge in Southwest Philadelphia.
Weather permitting, motorists are advised of the following travel restriction:
- Monday, April 13, through Thursday, April 16, a single lane closure will be in place at 9:00 PM, followed by a double lane closure from 12:00 AM (Midnight) to 5:00 AM on northbound I-95 between Enterprise Avenue and Broad Street (Route 611) for pavement repairs.
- Friday, April 17, from 8:00 PM to 9:00 AM the following morning, a single lane closure will be in place on northbound I-95 between Enterprise Avenue and Broad Street to begin setup of a construction traffic pattern for upcoming bridge repairs. A second northbound lane closure will be in place from 10:00 PM Friday until 7:00 AM Saturday.
Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work area because backups and delays will occur.
As construction progresses this spring, PennDOT will maintain three lanes of traffic in each direction on I-95. To accommodate travelers to the FIFA World Cup and the MLB All-Star game, PennDOT will work to minimize traffic impacts until these events are completed.
In late July 2026, long-term construction patterns maintaining three travel lanes during peak hours will be installed, while frequent off-peak and weekend lane restrictions will be coordinated with other regional events, including those at the Sports Complex in South Philadelphia.
Under Phases 1 and 2, the main 5,183-foot, double-decked I-95 Girard Point Bridge and nine approach structures between Enterprise Avenue and Broad Street (Route 611) will be repaired.
Improvements include:
- Rehabilitating the bridge deck, including the application of a Latex Modified Concrete (LMC) overlay, and improving the decks’ expansion joints.
- Replacing the bridge parapets (barriers).
- Rehabilitating and painting select areas of steel superstructure.
- Rehabilitating substructure concrete.
- Replacing and improving the bridge’s lighting and drainage systems.
- Installing protection and scour remediation for the main Girard Point Bridge pier in the Schuylkill River.
- Upgrading Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) on I-95.
Ten additional approach structures will be repaired under Phase 3 of the project, which is expected to start at the completion of Phase 2. Phase 4, not yet scheduled, will repaint the main bridge. The entire project is expected to finish in early 2031.
South State Inc. of Bridgeton, NJ, is the general contractor on Phases 1 and 2.
The project is financed with 90 percent federal and 10 percent state funds and is part of PennDOT’s Bridge Preservation Program to ensure the structural integrity and rideability of Pennsylvania’s bridges.
