Pittsburgh, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is announcing the next phase of work on Route 51 (Clairton Boulevard) in Pleasant Hills and Jefferson Hills boroughs, Allegheny County will begin Friday, July 24 weather permitting.
Intermittent lane restrictions and traffic stoppages controlled by flaggers will begin at approximately 8:00 PM Friday, July 24 on Route 51 between East Bruceton Street and Mall Drive for crews to conduct preparatory work to implement the next phase of work. Once the preparatory work is completed, northbound Route 51 traffic will be crossed back over into a single northbound lane. Southbound Route 51 traffic will remain in a single southbound lane. Crews will work within the center lanes of Route 51. All traffic will only be able to turn left at signalized intersections.
The traffic shift is expected to be fully in place by 5:00 AM Monday morning, July 27 but could be implemented earlier if the preparation work is done sooner.
This $19.85 million roadway project on Clairton Boulevard includes milling and resurfacing, concrete replacement, bridge preservation work on three structures (two structures over Lewis Run and one structure over Lebanon Church Road), drainage work, guide rail improvements, ADA curb ramp updates, PRT bus stop improvements, signing and pavement marking installation, and other miscellaneous construction activities. Also included is an adaptive traffic signal project that will provide upgrades to 24 intersections, including full signal replacement at nine intersections, from Peters Creek Road in Jefferson Hills Borough to Stewart Avenue in the City of Pittsburgh. Up to one-mile-long single-lane restrictions will occur in each direction limiting left-turn movements except for at signalized intersections. Detours for the left-turn movements will be posted. The project is anticipated to conclude in 2028.
