Liberty Tunnel Overnight Closures Next Week in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is announcing closures of the Liberty Tunnel (Route 3069) in the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, will occur Monday through Thursday nights, October 12-15 weather permitting.

The Liberty Tunnel will close to traffic to allow crews from Mosites Construction Company to conduct work on the tunnel roof replacement project according to the schedule below:

Monday and Tuesday, October 12-13

  • The inbound (northbound) Liberty Tunnel will close from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM each night.

Wednesday and Thursday, October 14-15

  • The outbound (southbound) Liberty Tunnel will close from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM each night.

Posted Inbound (northbound) Detour

  • Take Route 51 (Saw Mill Run Boulevard) northbound
  • Take the left exit to I-376 West/US 19 South toward Carnegie/Airport/West End
  • Take Exit 69A toward US 19 South/Banksville Road
  • Keep left (towards South Truck 19/51) and loop back to I-376 eastbound toward Fort Pitt Tunnel
  • Follow eastbound I-376 through Fort Pitt Tunnel and across the Fort Pitt Bridge
  • For access to I-279 destinations follow I-279 signage, all other destinations take exit toward I-376 East/Monroeville
  • Take the left-hand exit to Grant Street (Exit 71A)
  • Turn right onto the Boulevard of the Allies
  • End detour

Posted Outbound (southbound) Detour

  • From the Liberty Bridge, turn right onto PJ McArdle Roadway
  • Continue straight onto Merrimac Street
  • Turn right onto Woodruff Street
  • Follow Woodruff Street to Route 51/19 (Saw Mill Run Boulevard)
  • Turn left onto Route 51/19 and follow back to Route 19 (West Liberty Avenue)
  • End detour

Alternate outbound (southbound) route

  • Use the outbound Fort Pitt Tunnel or West End Circle to Route 51

If inclement weather occurs, the restrictions may not occur as scheduled.

The Liberty Tunnel Portal roof will be replaced in 2026 on this $3.47 million project in the City of Pittsburgh. Overnight closures and detours of the Liberty Tunnel will occur during the project, however, the closures will not occur in both directions simultaneously. The overall project, which includes drainage improvements and other miscellaneous construction activities, is expected to be complete in the spring of 2027.
