State Street Closure Postponed Due to Change in Work Schedule

A change in the schedule for utility relocation work has allowed for a delayed start to the closure of State Street near the Bayfront Parkway in the City of Erie.

A change in the schedule for utility relocation work has allowed for a delayed start to the closure of State Street near the Bayfront Parkway in the City of Erie.

State Street will be closed from Second Street to the parkway starting July 28, 2025, shortening the duration of the closure by one week. The closure will also restrict access from the Bayfront Parkway (Route 4034) onto the south or downtown side of State Street.

A vehicle detour will be posted using Holland Street, East Third Street, and the Bayfront Parkway. A pedestrian detour will be posted using West Third Street, Holland Street, and East Front Street.

Temporary pedestrian access along State Street is planned for August 21 to 24, 2025 to accommodate the expected increase in foot traffic during the Tall Ships Erie Festival.

To accommodate the change in traffic patterns in connection with the closure, temporary traffic signals, and push-button pedestrian signals are being installed at the intersection of East Third Street and French Street, and the intersection of East Third Street and Holland Street. The pedestrian push-button system at the intersection of Holland Street and Bayfront Parkway are being updated to include an audible component.

These systems, as well as the State Street detour, will remain in place during the closure of the Bayfront Parkway from Sassafras Street Extension to Holland Street which is scheduled to start September 2, 2025.

Drivers can continue to access all businesses on the waterfront side of the parkway by using the Holland Street and East Front Street, or Sassafras Street Extension and East Front Street Extension.

The City of Erie will also be making updates to the parking and traffic patterns on certain roads in the area of State Street south of the parkway. Roadway updates for Erie streets can be found on the city’s website.
