Work has begun on a $430,000 project to improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians and bicyclists in the City of Erie, Erie County,
The project, which is being done through a collaboration of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the City of Erie, consists of a comprehensive plan to install signage and pedestrian enhancements to encourage walking and bicycling activity downtown.
Work will include the installation of wayfinding signs, bike route markers, network map kiosks, downtown gateway signs and district identification signs, directional signs to key landmarks, upgrades to shared pavement markings for bike lanes (sharrows), and high-visibility crosswalks at key intersections.
The project area is 27 miles, including 11 miles along the Bayfront Connector Trail and 16 miles within Erie's urban core.
Work began today and is expected to be completed by October 2023.
There will be limited disruptions to traffic during the project, but motorists may encounter short-term lane restrictions and traffic controlled by flaggers.
The contractor is M and B Services, LLC, of Clarion, PA. The contract cost is $429,941, which is to be paid entirely with federal funds.
