    Atherton Street Update for Late August

    Clearfield, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) updated drivers on its Atherton Street (Route 3014) project, which stretches from Curtin Road to just north of Westerly Parkway in State College, for the start of August. While there is no work scheduled tomorrow or Saturday to avoid impacting traffic for Penn State move-in, motorists traveling through the work zone can expect the following the week of August 21: 

    • Monday, August 21, through Saturday, August 26, two crews will continue full-depth roadway reconstruction and prep to install new curb and gutter between Beaver and West Fairmount avenues. A third crew will prep and pour new sidewalks in the same area. Flaggers in the roadway will enforce an alternating traffic pattern.
    • Monday, August 21, through Friday, August 25, a crew will place brick pavers in designated sidewalk areas between Clay Lane and Highland Avenue. Flaggers in the roadway will enforce an alternating traffic pattern.
    • Tuesday, August 22, through Thursday, August 24, a crew will place new curb and gutter between Beaver and West Fairmount avenues. Flaggers in the roadway will enforce an alternating traffic pattern.
    • Monday, August 21, a crew will pave the sewer line trench at the Westerly Parkway intersection. PennDOT will set the traffic signal to flash mode. Flaggers in the roadway will direct pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
    • Tuesday, August 22, a crew will place new sewer line at the West Hamilton Avenue intersection. Flaggers in the roadway will enforce an alternating traffic pattern.
    • Wednesday, August 23, and Thursday, August 24, a crew will prep to tie the new waterline into the existing water line at the intersection of Logan Avenue with flaggers in the roadway enforcing an alternating traffic pattern.
    • PennDOT will set the traffic signal at Beaver Avenue to flash mode as needed throughout the week. Flaggers in the roadway will enforce an alternating traffic pattern. PennDOT urges drivers to pay attention to the work zone and directional signage to enhance safety and keep traffic flowing efficiently.
    • The right lane of Route 26 (Beaver Avenue) northbound heading toward downtown remains closed between H and Cresson alleys.
    • A pedestrian detour remains in place. PennDOT urges pedestrians to use said detour and avoid walking through closed sidewalk signs into the construction zone.
    • Message boards alerting motorists of the construction zone and changing traffic patterns remain in place.

    PennDOT posts updates and detour information on the Atherton Street project page weekly and encourages drivers to visit the page at www.penndot.pa.gov/AthertonStreet. 

    Overall work on the project includes roadway reconstruction, drainage improvements that include pipes and inlets, water and sewer lines, concrete curbing, sidewalks and detectable warning surfaces, pavement markings, traffic signals and supports, and miscellaneous items.

    HRI, Inc. of State College is the contractor on this $30.7 million project. PennDOT anticipates the contractor completing the project in the fall of 2024, but all work is weather and schedule dependent.

    PennDOT reminds motorists that intermittent traffic stops are possible for short periods during work activities and urges drivers to use caution when traveling through the work zone. PennDOT also reminds drivers not to follow construction equipment into the closed lane and to use both lanes to the merge point to minimize traffic back-ups and shorten travel delays when approaching the work zone.

    Motorists can check conditions on major roadways by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information, and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras.
