District 6 Projects - Montgomery County

Route 73 (Church Road) Intersection Improvements

Project Overview

County: Montgomery
Municipality: Cheltenham Township
State Route(s): Route 73, Route 2054
Local Name(s): Church Road, Greenwood Avenue, Rices Mill Road
Project Type: Intersection Improvements
Last Updated: September 2025

Construction began in the spring of 2024, including both aerial and underground utility relocations carried out under temporary traffic detours. The utility relocations are ongoing and are expected to be finished by fall 2025. Once all utility relocations are complete, the project will move to stage 2, which will involve one-way traffic detours. During stage 2, PennDOT’s contractor will start the permanent reconstruction of parts of Greenwood Avenue and Church Road, along with the construction of a new drainage basin along Greenwood Avenue. Additional details, including a pictorial representation of the Stage 2 traffic pattern, are available through the “Fall 2025 Construction Update” link in the Resources section of the project webpage.

The horizontal curve along Church Road will also be eased to enhance visibility and sight distance near the intersection. Coordination with Cheltenham Township has added a sidewalk to the project, providing pedestrian access from nearby homes and Wyncote Elementary School to Curtis Arboretum. Other project improvements include traffic signal replacements, ADA ramps, new pedestrian crosswalks, installation of a new drainage pipe and stormwater management system, replanting trees within Curtis Arboretum, and reconstructing stone walls that will be affected by the project.
